What's Not Done Yet?

As I enter my 3rd week of school, I realize so many you have been in for over a month already (Sorry!!)
I have this table in my room and a large area behind my desk that I just can't seem to get organized, so I created a time schedule for myself where I stay in my room for at least an hour and work on one spot!! It is hard, of course, since I have been landlocked in the conference room with parents and meetings since school started but I have to do something.

What are you still working on getting clear? Is there and area that you keep making into an organized pile?

I am going to take some before pictures tomorrow and Thursday (off on Wednesday :-) ) and then show you if my timed plan worked next week. Wish me luck!!

New teacher/new building things to get started

Someone asked me about what they should have for themselves in their new classroom. That depends greatly on you. Every teacher is different and requires something diffferent.  I thought about me and how over the years I have made sure to get these things for myself and keep at school.

CVS, Riteaid, Walgreens

I know a teacher that refuses to buy coffee every day so she bought a small $20 coffee pot, a gallon jug of water and her coffee and filters and kept them in the back of her room.

Black goes with whatever you wore to work that day.

Another teacher, like myself, was always cold and since we can never tell what the AC/heating unit will do on any given day at my school, I keep a lightweight black sweater and a fleece hoodie in my closet. If I'm too cold, I can always add a layer since it is in school.   Don't forget a flat pair of shoes, ladies!! Something black makes the most sense with comfortable inside!!

Are you a snacker?  I am a snacker but I needed to snack discreetly on a Prep period while making copies. I buy a large container of pretzel rods, cracker and cheese/peanut butter packs, peanuts, and/or almonds and bring a case of water to school.

Do you buy lunch every day? For lunch, which is a joke for most teachers, try something easy and quick. Microwave meals, popcorn, canned tuna or chicken ( I keep mayo and mustard packets in a tub in my room) or pack a salad then add the canned meat later. Buy your favorite dressing and keep in the teachers' lounge fridge for salad days.  Don't forget plastic forks, spoons, knives, and a small bowl (all dollar store purchases).

Just some thoughts as my school year gets ready to start of what's on my shopping list. Remember to keep all snacks in some kind of plastic container and out of sight of the kids.

Good luck organizing yourself!!

Absent Student Idea

I just saw this on ourclassweb.com on Pinterest, of course. A great way to make sure your absent students get their work. Keep enough copies of work for your absent students for each day they were absent. I put there names on the top of each with the date so I remember when they were absent and what it was they missed - homework or classwork.

What's in your desk?

So we are shopping for school supplies for the kids and the room but are you ready for yourself? The year will have lots of challenging moments. My desk has an "adult" drawer for all kinds of needs during the year. Here is my list of what I keep in this container:
1- Pepto
2- Tums
3- Aleve, Tylenol
4- Excedrin Migraine
5-Pepermints/Mentos
6-Bandaids
7- Peroxide
8-Plastic gloves
9-Cotton balls
10- Airborne

That's my basic list. You can fit a shoe box or one half this size into most teacher desks. Numbers 5-9 are for the kids.  Having them on hand cuts down on the trips to the nurse.

Saving Pinterest Part 2

So Monica Mc. left a message for me about saving Pinterest to my flashdrive. So I told her I would put step by step directions with pictures.
So here goes.
I will use a repin on my School Stuff board under Audrey Fields.
When I saw this pin, I clicked on it and it opens into another window. From that window, I click on the picture again and it takes you to the site where it came from Minds in Bloom .
This particular site has the list there so you can cut and paste into a word document for later use.

Here's another one under School Stuff. Thanks to lifein4b.blogspot.com - This is from her site. Stop by and give her comments.
I do the same thing as above. If you have a PC you can right click on the picture. When the menu pops up, go to Save as. Save the picture as whatever and wherever. You know have a poster saved as a picture. Still trying to figure how to do that same thing with a MAC.

Let me know how it goes.

Saving my Pinterst!!

Well, if you haven't been to Pinterest yet this summer, you have missed sooooo much!! But it is not too late - get on over and fall in love (your arms, eyes, shoulders, and back will not agree) with the site and all the GREAT TEACHER things!!

Stop by here:
PINTEREST!!

Now I have spent a large chunk of the summer there and I save links and free things to my flash-drive for printing and saving. The problem is my flash-drive then becomes the crazy place with over 200 things that need to organized.

Before shot of my flash-drive:
You can't even see how far down it goes and this is just the file that says RANDOM SCHOOL STUFF! So I spent an hour going over each one (lots of duplicates- loved it so much) and ORGANIZED THEM INTO FOLDERS!!

After shot of my flash-drive:
I created new folders and color-coded them for just what I needed. It makes it easier to find and my flash-drive doesn't look a hot mess.

Now, back to Pinterest!! Enjoy your day!

50 Things!!

http://notebookingfairy.com/2010/12/50things-to-put-in-a-notebook/

This has to be the single best thing I have found to help organize student notebooks!!

Visit the site and check out which ones you might use this year and begin your organizing now!!

I found this great organizing tip on Pinterst - Teacher know best!!! I have already done one like this for my READ 180 documents - now to get the rest of the room done!!

Don't waste time sifting through piles of worksheets - save yourself the headache and create a “master book,” a tool that organizes all your papers and keeps them all in one place. Tackle your mound of papers by sorting through each one, tossing what you don't need and keeping one copy of every important worksheet. Place them in a 3-ring binder with dividers for each month.

Reading Group Materials

Hey there.

I have made some new goals for myself and I hope you will help me out.

I am trying to keep you updated with organizing tips daily. Your comments and suggestions will help keep me focused.

So today I share how I keep 3 different classes separate and moving smoothly with their reading and small group materials.

In September, each child gets a gallon sized plastic bag, a colored folder, pencil, sharpener, and eraser. The colored folders are different for each class so they know the difference.   When they have picked their book for independent reading and have their Reading Logs, they go into the bag. My groups rotate every 20 minutes (READ 180 program) so they easily grab their bag and it already contains what they need for small group work and reading.

Each class has their own bin so only one bin with the right colors are pulled out at the beginning of class and it goes back at the end of class.

Hope this is something you might find helpful in your organizing!!

The other color I used last year was red.  Pick whatever colors you like - remember the kids have to be able to decorate/design their folders.

Prepackaged or Created?

As my fellow bloggers post some very cool posters and bookmarks for their classrooms, I wonder about the non-artsy teachers.

Do you prefer the self created charts and posters (or have your friends make them for you) or the pre-packaged ones sold at the teachers' stores?

Let me know in comments below.
